Advantages & disadvantages of concrete houses

Concrete homes are thought of as being unconventional as they are not built using brick or with a timber frame structure. Some people may see them as ugly and not as pleasing on the eye as a brick house may be. However architects and designers have ensured that modern concrete homes can still look aesthetically pleasing. But what are the pros and cons of building homes using concrete?
Firstly, concrete blocks are ideal for foundations and basement walls because they're stronger than poured concrete. Partition walls in any home can be put up quickly using concrete blocks, and their cores or voids can be filled with steel reinforcing rods and concrete for additional strength. So this can save time. Moreover, acoustically concrete is advantageous, as it’s virtually soundproof. Concrete blocks also provide insulation against cold and heat and may reduce a home's energy usage.

The most obvious thing that people think of when thinking about concrete homes is likely to be how they look. If you have a builder who does not have a vision for the creative exteriors that can be put on a concrete block building, then you may end up with a structure that looks commercial. It is possible to create something that is pleasing on the eye, but it is important that you and your builder have enough knowledge and information on how this can be achieved before building works begin.

As well as being able to save energy, concrete homes are also fire-resistant. If in the unfortunate event that a fire spreads throughout the home, there is much less chance of extensive damage than there might be in a home built by other methods. Few concrete block homes collapse after fires. There are also different finishes available. Concrete block typically comes in a smooth finish, but can also be found in a more decorative, split finish that many people find more attractive. So there are possibilities and scope for you to make your concrete home look trendy and modern.
When making any sort of decision of this nature, the financial aspect is of course and important factor. The cost of building with concrete blocks can be higher than traditional frame construction. Money varies across time and regions, but they can cost up to three times as much as the 2x4s and drywall typically used for construction.

All in all, it appears more and more people are coming around to the idea that concrete homes might not be an ugly slab in the ground that many perceive them to be. If you and your builder and designer can gather as much information as possible, there are certainly ways you can make them appealing on the eye. Of course there are certain aspects which you need to consider, such as cost, and an increased risk of water damage. When you weigh everything up, you need to decide if you are crazy or cool on the concept of a concrete home.
